The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control announced that Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his family have been added to the sanctions list. This list includes Petro's wife Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia, his son Nicolas Petro, and the Minister of Interior Armando Benedetti.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that cocaine production in Colombia has reached its highest level in decades since Petro took office. Bessent accused Petro of turning a blind eye to the increase of drug cartels and being unwilling to stop this situation.
U.S. President Donald Trump used harsh words for Petro, saying, "He is a rogue and a bad man. He is producing too much drugs." Trump also added that all payments to Colombia have been halted and the relationship with this country will be reconsidered.
Trump announced that they decided to impose serious sanctions on the country, claiming that drugs from Colombia are largely brought to the U.S. through Mexico.
