In the United States, the GSA (General Services Administration) has requested the reinstatement of hundreds of employees who were laid off through early retirement and resignation programs as part of its reforms to the federal workforce. According to internal correspondence obtained by the Associated Press, those who have agreed to return to work are expected to return to work on October 6 after about seven months of paid leave.
"GSA's leadership team is reviewing workforce actions and making adjustments in the best interest of U.S. taxpayers," a GSA spokesperson said in a statement. However, detailed numbers on turnover and potential cost overruns have not yet been provided.
GSA's workforce management, lease terminations, and building sale plans are reportedly being reviewed by an independent oversight body, with results to be released in the coming months.
Former US President Donald Trump laid off thousands of federal employees after taking office. Many agencies were affected, including the ministries of Agriculture, Energy, Labor, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs. This prompted many unions and organizations across the country to sue the Trump administration.
