A delegation of 11 members led by Chris Coons, a senior Democrat member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, traveled to Copenhagen to address tensions following President Donald Trump's controversial remarks regarding Greenland.
After Trump's statements indicating that Greenland is needed for national security reasons, the delegation met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen in Copenhagen. Statements made after the meeting highlighted the challenging living conditions faced by the people of Greenland.
After the meeting, Senator Coons stated, "There is currently no security threat to Greenland. However, we believe that more research and investment are needed for Arctic security. With the information we have gathered here, we will return to Washington with a renewed perspective," he expressed.
On the other hand, various demonstrations are being held across Denmark, particularly in Copenhagen, to show support for Greenland. According to reports in the Danish press, hundreds gathered in the capital, marching towards the US Embassy in Copenhagen with Greenland flags and banners reading "We are not for sale."
