The U.S. Department of Energy, in collaboration with AMD, has announced the construction of two new artificial intelligence supercomputers based on a $1 billion investment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These projects, named Lux AI and Discovery, are said to aim to meet the needs of the U.S. in the fields of energy and security.
Expected to be operational in early 2026, Lux AI will enhance the artificial intelligence capabilities of the U.S. Department of Energy. This system is anticipated to make significant advancements in critical areas such as fusion, fission, material discovery, quantum technologies, and energy grid modernization.
On the other hand, it has been announced that the Discovery supercomputer will become operational in 2028. This computer aims to provide innovative solutions in quantum systems through high-performance computing and artificial intelligence integration.
The U.S. Department of Energy and AMD emphasized that the total investment of $1 billion through these projects will greatly contribute to developments in science, energy, and national security.
