The U.S. Department of State has reissued the highest level travel warning for Venezuela, urging all U.S. citizens residing in the country to "leave immediately."
On its website, the department noted that the "Do Not Travel" warning remains the norm, along with information that all diplomatic personnel in Caracas were withdrawn in 2019. The renewed warning emphasizes that routine and emergency consular services are not available.
The warning highlighted that U.S. citizens remaining in Venezuela may face "high risks including arbitrary detention, torture while detained, terror threats, kidnapping, and civil unrest." It also noted the prevalence of violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery, and carjacking. The statement added that security forces have responded violently to pro-democracy protests.
The department recommended that individuals who must travel to Venezuela in emergencies take additional precautions, such as preparing a will, obtaining professional security support, and securing medical evacuation insurance.
On December 3, President Donald Trump stated during a press conference at the White House regarding operations against drug-laden vessels, "We will soon begin attacks from the land as well."
