The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced that it has officially launched an investigation to determine whether China is abiding by the trade agreement signed during the first term of President Donald Trump.
In a statement from the USTR, it was noted that China's implementations under the first phase trade agreement would be thoroughly examined. This investigation will assess whether China has fulfilled its commitments, while also reviewing potential obligations and restrictions on U.S. trade in case of any violations.
The trade negotiations between the U.S. and China culminated in December 2019, following a long effort, with the signing of the first phase trade agreement. In this agreement, China had agreed to make significant structural changes in the areas of intellectual property, technology transfer, agriculture, and financial services.
Additionally, considering the large trade deficit between the U.S. and China, it was stated that China had committed to purchasing significant additional amounts of goods and services from U.S. This situation is of critical importance for the future of economic relations between the two countries.
