European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made important statements following the weekly meeting held in Brussels. As the fourth anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War approaches, von der Leyen emphasized that Russia has not taken a step back and shows no signs of remorse in its pursuit of peace.
Von der Leyen stated that Ukraine needs to be in a strong position to achieve peace. In this context, she announced that significant support would be provided to meet Ukraine's military and budgetary needs in 2026 and 2027.
Leaders of EU member states have agreed to support Ukraine in a stable manner. Von der Leyen expressed that 90 billion euros in credit would be provided to Ukraine, and this would happen through a collaboration involving 24 of the 27 member countries.
Ursula von der Leyen mentioned that 60 billion euros of the support would be allocated for military assistance, while 30 billion euros would be used for general budget support. She indicated that Ukraine would use its military resources to procure equipment from EU and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member countries.
The 30 billion euros for budget support will be allocated to continue Ukraine's reform processes. Von der Leyen stated that this support would be conditional on important criteria such as democracy, the rule of law, and anti-corruption.
The proposed credit will come into effect after approval by EU member countries and the European Parliament (EP).
