The European Union (EU) Commission, in the framework of the Digital Services Act (DSA), has requested official information from major platforms such as Apple App Store, Booking.com, Microsoft Bing, Google Play and Google Search on how risks related to financial fraud are identified and managed.
The statement reminded that fraudsters widely use online platforms for targeting and communication. This poses a major security risk for both consumers and companies.
Under EU law, very large online platforms are required to assess and mitigate the spread of illegal content and systemic risks to consumer protection. The Commission has requested detailed information from companies on how they assess the existence of fake content and what measures they have taken to minimize the risks of financial fraud.
The EU's technology rules impose strict rules for large digital companies in Europe. Firms that do not comply with these rules can face high fines.
