The European Union (EU) has approved a new sanctions package targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure. With this move, the EU aims to weaken Russia's capacity to conduct war against Ukraine.
According to Denmark's announcement, as part of the new sanctions package, imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia will be banned starting in 2027. Additionally, transaction restrictions on two major oil companies in Russia's energy sector will also be tightened.
Another important provision added to the package is the inclusion of 117 "shadow fleet" vessels, which Russia has used to evade previous sanctions, on the sanctions list. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized that the sanctions have caused significant harm to the Russian economy.
The EU's sanctions package was delayed for weeks despite objections from Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia. However, after the U.S. decided to impose sanctions on Russia's two largest oil producers, Rosneft PJSC and Lukoil PSJC, the EU adopted these measures.
According to the announcement, the new sanctions target 45 entities that have helped Russia to evade sanctions. Among these entities are 12 companies based in China and Hong Kong.
