European Commission Launches Competition Investigation Against Google

The European Commission has announced that it has initiated an investigation into Google for alleged violations of competition law. The justification for the investigation lies in Google’s use of online content from publishers without compensation and the requirement to obtain consent for the use of their content.

The statement indicated that the allegations claiming Google’s artificial intelligence system illegally feeds on the online content of third parties will be examined. European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera emphasized that while artificial intelligence offers innovative opportunities for individuals and businesses in Europe, this progress must be achieved without compromising fundamental principles. Ribera stated, "We are investigating whether Google imposes unfair conditions on publishers and disadvantages competing AI developers."

Content Creators Are Not Paid

Nowadays, content creators are required to grant Google permission for their content for the training of AI models; however, they receive no compensation in this process. Moreover, YouTube prohibits Google’s competitors from using platform content for training their own AI systems. This situation strengthens accusations that Google has an unfair advantage in developing its own AI models.

Large companies and digital platforms in Europe must comply with the EU's strict technology regulations. While it remains unclear how long the investigation into Google will take, the company is also facing lawsuits related to other competition violations, such as discrimination against media organizations.

Digital platforms that violate EU rules are subject to significant fines.
