The European Union (EU) is working on trade measures to prevent China from maintaining its global dominance in rare earth elements if diplomatic talks with China do not yield positive results.
According to Bloomberg, the European Commission is preparing a list of trade measures that could be implemented against China. Additionally, it is developing detailed plans to protect critical supplies and secure alternative sources in the short term.
China's export restrictions on rare earth elements pose a significant threat to Europe's industry and security due to the critical role these raw materials play in various sectors.
EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic stated that if an agreement is not reached after his meeting with Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, it would negatively affect relations between Europe and China.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, discussions on these trade measures are also expected to be on the agenda at the upcoming EU leaders' summit in Brussels. However, due to the sensitivity of the issue, the details are said to be kept confidential.
