The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa from Japan, Richard Robson from Australia, and Omar M. Yaghi from the United States for their groundbreaking work on metal-organic frameworks.
This award highlights the importance of new molecular structures developed by scientists. Metal-organic frameworks contain large voids where molecules can enter and exit. Researchers have developed these structures for various applications, such as collecting water from desert air, removing pollutants from water, capturing carbon dioxide, and storing hydrogen.
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to David Baker for his work in information-driven protein design, while Demis Hassabis and John Jumper were recognized for their contributions to protein structure prediction.
