A recent report published by Oxfam states that the total wealth of just 12 billionaires is greater than that of the entire world population. Amitabh Behar mentioned that the wealth of billionaires increased by $2.5 trillion last year and that the growth rate of this massive accumulation has tripled compared to the past.
Behar pointed out that this enormous wealth not only poses an economic challenge but also constitutes a serious political threat. The key highlights from the report are as follows:
Behar noted that over 50% of the world's population lives in poverty, and many people cannot access basic needs such as food, water, and medicine. He emphasized that the decisions made by governments are generally aimed at further enriching the ultra-wealthy.
He drew attention to how this situation undermines the freedoms and fundamental rights of ordinary citizens and expressed that a global wave of "anger" and protests is rising.
Behar stated that instead of being hopeless about the dark picture, there is still hope for solutions. He particularly mentioned initiatives being implemented in South America and South Africa for the fair taxation of multinational corporations and ultra-wealthy individuals.
Additionally, he emphasized that the real source of hope lies in ordinary citizens, believing that societies will hold their governments and billionaires accountable for this injustice and will build a fairer future.
