Prof. Dr. Mustafa Hasöksüz, a faculty member at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, shared important information by evaluating the developments regarding foot-and-mouth disease. He noted that the first cases in our country were observed in April, reminding that there are seven different types of the virus.
Prof. Dr. Hasöksüz stated that the fight against the SAT-2 strain, which originated from South Africa, began in 2003, and this year, we are facing the SAT-1 strain for the first time since 1963. He provided information that the outbreak has affected not only Turkey but also neighboring countries.
Emphasizing that quarantine and vaccination practices play a critical role in combating foot-and-mouth disease, Hasöksüz said, “A special institute has been established, and two private companies are producing vaccines. The ministry has taken necessary precautions, and vaccination efforts have begun.”
He also pointed out the importance of halting animal movements, warning that “a specific vaccine needs to be developed for each virus type. Animals should be vaccinated before going to pasture.” Hasöksüz highlighted that the period during which animals can carry the virus can last up to one year, stating that vaccination procedures should be repeated every four months. He stressed the importance of vaccinations being carried out especially before the Eid al-Adha.
In conclusion, although foot-and-mouth disease has been brought under control, he warned citizens that vaccination efforts need to continue.
