Faculty Member of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Veterinary Faculty Prof. Dr. Mustafa Hasöksüz shared important information by evaluating the developments regarding foot-and-mouth disease. He noted that the first cases were seen in our country in April and reminded that there are seven different types of the virus.
Prof. Dr. Hasöksüz stated that the first battle was fought against the SAT-2 strain, which originated from South Africa in 2003, and that this year, they are facing the SAT-1 strain for the first time since 1963. He provided information that the outbreak has affected not only Turkey but also neighboring countries.
Emphasizing the critical role of quarantine and vaccination practices in combating foot-and-mouth disease, Hasöksüz stated, “A special institute has been established, and two private companies are producing vaccines. The ministry has taken the necessary precautions and vaccination efforts have begun.”
He also pointed out the importance of stopping animal movements, warning that “It is necessary to develop specific vaccines for each virus type. Vaccinations must be completed before animals go out to pasture.” Hasöksüz highlighted that the duration for animals to carry the virus can extend up to one year and stated that vaccination procedures should be repeated every four months. He stressed the importance of carrying out vaccinations especially before the Eid al-Adha.
In conclusion, despite foot-and-mouth disease being under control, he warned citizens that vaccination efforts should continue.
