Bree from Philadelphia shared her difficult financial and family situation by joining The Ramsey Show. Her husband is currently working as an assistant manager at a trucking company and is considering working full-time at Uber. Bree mentioned that her husband is overwhelmed by his workload and relationships with staff and mechanics. "A friend at work told him that he could earn $2,000 a week with Uber," she said.
However, before making this transition, he wants to buy a new Toyota sedan and wants to put it under Bree's name, as her credit score is better. The couple currently has $40,000 in debt, Bree stays at home taking care of their few-year-old children and is also pregnant with their second child.
The host George Kamel was candid, stating, "I think you shouldn't listen to that friend." He added, "This car is going to appreciate in value in a short time and add extra burden to your debts." Bree expressed that their current financial situation is unknown, and most of the expenses are being charged to her husband's credit card.
Another host, Jade Warshaw, called for financial transparency. "We should have a bank account. We are spending our money together. I’m worried about our debt," she said. Warshaw suggested that Bree set three clear boundaries for her husband: no new debt, a job change should happen after the babies are born, and financial transactions should be done more openly.
Bree stated that she and her husband are immigrants. Kamel emphasized that debt is not the way to reach the American dream, saying, "The American dream is to go into as much debt as possible to finance a fake lifestyle to impress people." He suggested reminding Bree's husband of what he is doing in the world; considering that they have a young child and another on the way, real peace should be discussed by providing financial stability for the growth of the family.
Warshaw noted that how Bree's husband responds to this conversation will reveal a lot. She pointed out that if he continues to pursue the transition to Uber, the necessary step would be to seek counseling. When Bree finished the discussion, both hosts advised her to be firm, prepare a written budget, and protect her family from further financial stress.
